Biography:

Dr. Lange studies political philosophy and the American Founding. His most recently completed research project examines the classical Greek understanding of human excellence and its role in political life. His current research extends this work to examine the role of human excellence or virtue in liberal democracy. This includes an examination of conceptions of excellence or virtue among the theorists of liberal democracy, the views of the American Founders about the need for citizen virtue in the new republic, the original role of the states in fostering this virtue, and the current status of such efforts in state and federal initiatives in public education.

Research in Progress:

  • “The Limits of Political Rationalism in Plato’s Meno”
  • “Does Liberal Democracy Require Citizen Virtue?”
  • “Keepers of Excellence: Public Education and the States in the Federalist Era”
